POP-UP GARDEN

2012/LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE/EVENT SPACE

Landscape Arcitecture, Urban Planning, Event, Community

Based around the Christchurch gap filler projects, POP-UP GARDEN, is a temporay produce garden and event space used during the day for leisurely strolls and at night for cooking classes. The public are encouraged to gather ingrediants from the garden to use during the evening cooking classes hosted by local chefs.

This design addresses the issues of sustainability through the use of biodegradable and recycled materials.

The main element of the outdoor pop up garden is the Labyrinth. This is made up of straw bales stacked on top of each other to create the form. Straw bales offer a temporary base on which to grow produce. The straw acts a mulch which retains moisture and can be broken down once used and composted back into the earth. This technique of gardening Is great in a temporary situation as they can be easily bought into a space and set up. They have the added advantage of not needing a soil base or holes in the ground. This means they can be put straight onto Christchurch

Rubble and the produce can grow.

Once the pop up garden has seen the last of it’s produce grow the entire space will be taken apart and given to the community to re-use the

Materials.
