Te Aro Manga Whakaora is a response to the ever-increasing rainfall and heavier storm warnings that are calling for urgent action in Wellington. This design sees climate change as an opportunity for innovation and a chance to revive and nurture our environment. Before the early settlers came to Wellington Maori used to fish from streams that have now been diverted through pipes that run under the city. We have unearthed and revived the stream and run it through a purifying wetland, ensuring that the water sifts through the nutrients that the soil and native plants provide. The rain is also harnessed by miniature purifying systems that run down the side of buildings replacing pipes. This ensures that the water purifying starts as the rain hits the roofs and continues as it flows down through the ground. The seating area amongst the native plants encourages the revival of human interaction and creates an awareness of the need and opportunity to nurture and purify the ecosystem.
